The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in Maiden Address
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold commencement to his administration.
A Historic Figure
The 34-year-old political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

An Ambitious Platform
Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Subsidized daycare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating External Challenges
The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has sought to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
