In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
