Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle support.
